My name is Scott Allen and I am a freelance artist and graphic designer. My paintings are in the Cubist style and they've been referred to as "Neo Cubism" - I think that's pretty cool. Cubism emphasizes the flat, two-dimensional surface of the picture plane, without relying on the traditional techniques of perspective, foreshortening, lighting and shading. My aim is to present a different reality in the painting where the subject matter is portrayed by geometric, fragmented shapes and forms whose several sides and positions can be seen simultaneously (how's that for a run-on sentence!). I paint in Cubist style because of the motion that I can give to a piece (the illusion of 3 dimensional movement on a 2 dimensional surface) by showing more than one angle of an object at one time. I start by sketching the subject at different angles or at different times then I combine these sketches into one final piece that shows these multiple views. Sometimes I paint purely abstract just for the fun of it.
I received my B.F.A. in graphic design from Central Michigan University. I have lived in San Francisco, Atlanta and now Ann Arbor. While in Atlanta I studied at the Savannah College of Art and Design
I am also involved in the marching band, drum corps, winter percussion activity, where I design and teach the drill . Most recently I have been working with Northcoast Academy Indoor Percussion Ensemble.
